Comments about the work delivered by Manor and Castle Development Trust and their partners
Manor and Castle Development Trust held a number of Roadshows for parents and others in local community settings. Topics covered included Exploitation, Drugs Awareness, Online Safety.
MCDT said:
‘The biggest difference to delivery was developing roadshows for parents and carers.’
‘Because of the flexible nature of the project, we were able to co design and deliver specific workshops on exploitation to parents and carers and make them accessible by using community settings.’
Feedback from those who attended the roadshows was positive, and included:
Exploitation
‘It was empowering and enabled me to take ownership of my own life. Even the Language used and the context enlightened me like a switch going on.’
‘I have a 15-year-old daughter who is quite vulnerable and this has given me the knowledge to recognise the signs and changes in behaviour. It’s given me the confidence and the words to have conversations with her about it and where to go for help and support.’
‘I am more aware of the signs and indicators of victims of exploitation also more able to spot vulnerable children and fundamentally where to report concerns.’
Drugs Awareness
‘This has built confidence in me to talk about it with my family and also with my peers who have older children navigating their way through teenage years.’
Online Safety (including Mobile Phones)
‘Having that knowledge, having conversations with the kids more has opened a window of communication that wasn’t there before.’
‘My children have confidence in me to help them. I got that confidence from the workshops and the follow up support from the team. I’m honestly so grateful.’
Manor and Castle Development Trust were able to support MASKK to extend their provision to further support young people and families, this included:
This included setting up a Young People’s Allotment, feedback included:
‘The allotment activity provided an excellent opportunity to connect with young people in a low-pressure environment, allowing for moments of self-reflection and growth.
‘This partnership activity has proven valuable not only for teaching practical skills but also for enhancing mental well-being and fostering positive social connections among young people.’
Opening up ‘Young People’s Hangouts’ which:
‘Helps shy or introverted individuals become more comfortable engaging with others, boosting their self-esteem and confidence.’
‘Hangouts often become places where individuals can talk about their concerns with peers who understand, providing emotional support, reducing feelings of isolation, and helping navigate difficult situations.’
‘These hangouts create a positive atmosphere where young people can thrive socially, emotionally, and intellectually.’
Providing Enriching Summer Opportunities for Young People:
‘This experience can boost their confidence and self-esteem, as they realize they can overcome fears and tackle new adventures.’
The Evaluation Report will be available in due course.
Manor and Castle Development Trust (MCDT) is a community development organisation set up in 1997 to work with local people to regenerate the neighbourhoods in the Manor and Castle ward. They have worked with their partners and local people to make a real difference in people’s lives and the local community for over 25 years, delivering a range of community activities and services and meeting local needs.
Their core work is community development, and they continue to work with local people to address the issues that matter most to the community. Some of the services they offer include training, help to find work, health and social prescribing, advocacy, support for families and positive activities for children and young people.
They have a Youth Hub, offering employment, training and support to young people referred to by the DWP. They work with an Alternative Education Provider to develop an Education and Training resource centre for children and young people. They are also the accountable body for the HAF programme in the East of Sheffield, providing positive activities with food for over 2000 children and young people annually.
MCTD x SY-NC goals
Together we will strengthen and build the existing Youth and Community Providers Forum by creating more opportunities for collaboration and a sustainable platform to address some of the serious challenges facing this community.
We will bring expertise to support the re-building of the infrastructure needed to help children, young people and families with the issues facing them in the next 2 – 3 years.
By working with existing community assets, we’ll improve accessibility for young people locally and focus on developing peer-led projects and mentoring to work with young people who are the most disaffected.
We want to understand the impact of the widening inequalities and worsening financial hardship on young people and their families, particularly mental health and criminal exploitation, much of which is hidden.
We’re also going to recruit, train and support volunteers to seed fund new provision for children and young people to fill the current gap.
